Barytes prices firming
Exchange rates and restricted supply pile on India and China price pressures
Chinese and Indian drilling grade prices are firming because of currency exchange rates, largely due to the strength of the renminbi and the rupee against the dollar.
Other factors have also played their part, including the severe weather experienced in both China and India over the last few months and also a higher than expected level of demand.
Chinese drilling grade material has moved up by around $5/tonne from $68-70/tonne, FOB China to as high as $75/tonne, same basis.
At the beginning of the year, it was forecast that demand would be down in the wake of the global economic credit crunch, but in fact it is turning out to be a ”record year” for shipments, according to one leading player in the market.
This means that coming up to the end of the year there is very little material at the portside, a situation that has been compounded by the severe flooding disrupting transport links in the barytes producing provinces of Hunan, Guizhou and Sichuan, and the region of Guangxi.
Prices are also rising in India, with indications that prices are up by $2-4/tonne taking the prices of drilling grade, shipped in bulk, to $72-74/tonne, FOB Chennai.
The strength of the Indian rupee is one of the main drivers, but supply has also been affected by flooding, especially recovery of high grade 4.24 SG material used for drilling.
This comes on the heels of a price hike for Moroccan barytes, a combination of producer price increases and a new Highway Code which increased transport costs significantly. These in total raised prices by $15-17/tonne at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
